West Potomac Cruises Past Woodson
2/6/26 — The Woodson Cavaliers entered the night with the third-best record in the Patriot District, hoping to pull off an upset against the second-place West Potomac Wolverines. Instead, the Wolverines left no doubt.
Behind suffocating defense and crisp ball movement, West Potomac rolled to a dominant 59–28 victory over the Cavaliers.
The Wolverines set the tone immediately. Abby Beddis opened the scoring on the game’s first possession following the opening tip, then added three early assists as West Potomac jumped out to a 15–10 lead after the first quarter.
Woodson struggled against West Potomac’s aggressive man-to-man defense in the first half. The Cavaliers found it difficult to penetrate the lane and were forced into contested perimeter shots. Six-foot center Tazzy Alvarez, one of Woodson’s top scorers, was effectively shut out in the post, while fellow scoring threat Isabel Conklin was unable to find clean looks. Woodson managed just 12 points in the first half, with Alvarez and Conklin both held scoreless, as West Potomac took an 11-point lead into halftime.
The game slipped further out of reach after the break. West Potomac outscored Woodson by 13 points in the third quarter, extending its lead to 44–20. Lina Hashimi and Nancy Ngalieu each poured in seven points during the period, fueling the Wolverines’ surge.
Ngalieu, a junior transfer from Hayfield Secondary School, led all scorers with 15 points. Dawn Houston added 12 points, while Hashimi finished with 11 for West Potomac. For Woodson, sophomore guard Siena Ang led the Cavaliers with nine points, all coming on three three-pointers.
West Potomac’s balanced scoring and relentless defense proved too much, as the Wolverines firmly established their place near the top of the Patriot District standings.
West Potomac will next face Patriot District leader South County in a highly anticipated matchup. The game is scheduled for Monday, February 9th, at 7:15 p.m. at South County High School.
