South County Tops West Potomac, 50–40
2/9/26 — The South County Cavaliers, the top team in the Patriot District, continued their dominant season Monday night with a 50–40 victory over the second-place West Potomac Wolverines.
South County entered the matchup with a 19–1 record, while West Potomac came in at 16–3, including a previous 24-point loss to the Cavaliers earlier this season. While the Wolverines showed improvement by cutting the margin to 10 points this time, South County remained in control throughout the game.
West Potomac opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Abby Beddis, but offensive struggles and multiple turnovers soon followed. South County’s Adriana Ortiz-Mayorga set a physical tone in the first quarter, helping energize the Cavaliers despite scoring just three points in the period. Natalya Wooten led South County early with nine first-quarter points, while Laila Hill added six, giving the Cavaliers a seven-point lead after one quarter.
The teams played evenly in the second quarter. Maia Melendez knocked down two key three-pointers to extend South County’s advantage, while West Potomac’s Skylar Strother answered with two three-pointers of her own to keep the Wolverines within reach. South County took a nine-point lead into halftime.
West Potomac looked poised to make a run in the second half, but South County repeatedly shut down any momentum. The Cavaliers made several key defensive plays, including drawing two offensive fouls. A steal by Tull that led to an and-one layup, along with an offensive rebound and put back by Ortiz-Mayorga, one of the smallest players on the court, helped South County maintain control. The Cavaliers outscored West Potomac by six in the third quarter to build a 15-point lead.
The Wolverines made one final push in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to eight points with four minutes remaining. However, South County sealed the win at the free-throw line, converting six foul shots down the stretch.
Tull led South County with 14 points before leaving the game in the fourth quarter due to injury. Wooten added 13 points, and Ortiz-Mayorga finished with 10. For West Potomac, Dawn Houston had a strong performance, scoring 14 points.
